RE: mastodon.social/@Mastodon/1151…
Excited to see quote posts go live on mastodon.social today! I'm very proud of the team's efforts to make this a feature that expands meaningful conversations while preserving author controls.
More details about this launch can be found in the post below and in the related threads.

Today, we’re ready to show you the upcoming quote posts feature in more detail. We’ve put together a blog post with examples of how quote posts will work on Mastodon, ahead of early access on our own servers next week 💬 Full launch to come, in Mastodon v4.5blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/09/…
Over the years, we’ve learned just how essential quoting is to many of you. Here's a deep dive on how quote posts will work on Mastodon.

It is taking a special approach, and with its introduction, quoting is no longer possible without restrictions.

The leadership around Mastodon is 💩 and repeatedly ensures that they are incompatible with the protocol and with all other #Fediverse software.

Drawback seems to be the missing alignment with the rest of the Fediverse.

But if you base your implementation on the protocol and the nearly 15-year-old standard, then it is, as Mathias says...

The concern is real when you look into X how citing is used for bashing and blaming. It’s better to have the opt-in option. All other SW which are supporting citing disregarded this concern.
Another example of missing alignment is how one can format text. There is almost as many variants as there as different SW. Mastodon, Plerona, Misskey (and derivatives), Friendica. All of them go their own way. Result: Your post only looks like you intended when your reader uses a SW with the same mechanism.

And unfortunately, this isn't the first time Eugen has done something like this and abused his ‘market power’.
Why didn't the other services join in?
