Linux. Wikipedia. The Fediverse. Openstreetmap. So many other results of nonprofit digital work. That all make the best conceivable use of digital tools. That all make the world better. I will use them and help improving some of them as long as I can.
just met a lady at the local brewery yesterday who moved with their partner to WA from Austin to start a small farm after jobs in tech and finance. People are absolutely doing it!
I worked in IT for 33 years. The last seven years were the best and the hardest. The latter not because of IT, but because of the commute. It did prompt me to retire a few years earlier than planned.
true until you try it. I've been in It over 50 years and at one point switched to farming. That is just backbreaking hard work every day all year. So I switched back to IT and try to relax. And now enjoy my 6 weeks of holiday each year.
I have never voluntarily worked in tech. I fucking hate it. I hate coding. Social media and technology has fucked up civilization beyond comprehension. I hate it here.
Long ago I learned the hard way to appreciate problems solvable with pencil and paper, compared to needing a computer! Anyway...
"A computer is all well and good. But to do any real work you need a kitchen table".
Also, I haven't owned a printer for 20 years. I hated them as a commercial programmer before I even owned my first, because files to be printed are more complex than any other type of file.
alas, agriculture is a lot of bureaucracy and dealing with monopoly firms that force you to use their software at their conditions and prices. Basically just like working in an IT department.
I've been a software engineer my entire life, and I can confirm this is true. I argue at work to make things simple, and yet we always end up chasing the new shiny flavor of the week practice.
Don't know about buying a farm, but a a few acres and a nice garden would go a long way to keeping yourself sane. Commercial farmers are just folk who do what they are told 24/7 by customers or agricultural advisors who are often chemical salesmen. On the other hand, growing your own food is like printing money.
it is enough to have been in a technical highschool and bachelor in Informatics at a university.
Once you coded a pool table, a micro kernel, the ontological web, some general network security, and an experimental thesis on god knows why the duck are you reading Noam Chomsky work that matters (not the political commentary, the one that matters) dealt with imperative and functional languages, you enter the job market or startup world being 90years soul old.
im seriously autistic (and probably mentally insane for that matter), i have so much screen time that everyone thinks i'm addicted, thus i can't relate to this. maybe future me would though.
30 years in software development. Built a small upscale house in a spread out neighborhood built on an old bankrupt golf course. Private neighborhood with a good HOA and a clear charter that defines our standards and boundaries. I ride my bike down to the peninsula point and the Chesapeake Bay. My dogs know all the local trails and food carts!
odd, I've been into tech all my life, since I got a C64 in 83 using my paper route money. I still love tech, I have seven computers, eight if you count my Amiga 500.
True. And a reason to buy an ‘old’ car that isn’t permanently connected to the internet. OTA updates and subscriptions to get some functionality activated? No thanks

I want fully automated greenhouses and everything solar powered.

I can tell you that you probably don't really want to choose farming over tech.
But if you can find a niche in "art", making even a modest income, that can really be a good life.

The longer I work in tech, the more the thought of the unevitable retirement due to old age comes to mind...
At least it has the advantage that nobody can force me to do what I don't like like using Microsoft Teams.

30+ years in IT = now 8 years on a farm.
And only working for/with paid #FOSS.
good work which /makes sense/ - and farming equipment sustains scratches and outlives 50+ years - and can be maintained and repaired.
Most importantly (IMO):
producing good and healthy FOOD is actually something I'm proud to show and teach my kids.
